Scope and Content Blackhall Silk Throwing Factory, Blackhall Street, Paisley, Renfrewshire This factory was founded in about 1848 by David Speirs & Co, probably to make thrown silk for use in the Paisley shawl trade, which was moving away from reliance on worsted yarns as fashion dictated. This shows the courtyard to the rear of the factory. The main street frontage building is on the left. Note the water-tower between the ranges, probably to supply a sprinkler system for fire control. Silk throwing is the process of unreeling the continuous strands of silk from cocoons spun by silkworms, and twisting them together to make a thread that can be woven.
