Scope and Content Vulcan Works, Renfrew Road, Paisley, Renfrewshire This large complex was founded in 1838, and became famous in the ownership of Fullerton, Hodgart & Barclay. The original works was on the west side of Renfrew Road, and a new works was built on the east side in the late 19th century. This shows the late 19th-century works from the north-west. The three-storeyed section was the offices. They were entered through the porch with belfry. The smaller door to the left was for workmen, the larger for staff and customers. This firm was one of the most versatile in the west of Scotland. It was noted latterly for its large pit winding engines. The works closed in 1980. The site was cleared, and the area to the east of Renfrew Road redeveloped as an industrial estate. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
