Scope and Content Horse-drawn milk delivery cart from Cuthbertson's Dairies Ltd, No 37 Vicarfield Street, delivering on Midlock Street, Glasgow There were still a few horse-drawn vehicles in Glasgow in the late 1960s, though they had been excluded from city centre streets. Scrap collection and milk delivery both employed light carts, like this one. This shows a cart belonging to Cuthbertson's Dairies Ltd, Govan, delivering bottled milk to a block of council houses in Midlock Street. Note that the cart has wooden wheels with solid rubber tyres. The horse is in blinkers to prevent it being distracted. In the 1960s most milk was delivered to individual houses, rather than being bought from shops. Returnable glass bottles were used, and these can be seen in crates on the cart. By the mid-1970s horse-drawn vehicles were virtually non-existent. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
