Scope and Content Bridge Street Station, Bridge Street, Glasgow This station was built in 1840-1 to designs by James Collie, replacing a temporary station opened in 1839 by the Glasgow & Paisley Joint Railway. The platforms were on a viaduct behind the street frontage, and were replaced in 1890, before being superseded by the extended Central Station in 1899-1906. This shows the street frontage from the north-east. Until about 1950 there was a portico in the recessed section. The four-storeyed building on the right was a hotel operated in connection with the station. The Glasgow & Paisley Joint Railway was used by the Glasgow, Paisley & Greenock and Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr railways, which had separate booking offices in this station. The buildings seen here were demolished in the early 1970s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
