Scope and Content Weaver's cottages, Nos 17-27 Main Street, Dairsie, Fife In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the hand-loom weaving of coarse linen cloths was a speciality of north-east Fife, and the village of Dairsie, founded in 1790, was an important centre of the trade. It was named 'Osnaburgh' as the cloths were called after Osnabruck in Germany. This shows a row of similar cottages, all with pantiled roofs, typical of both north-east Fife and the Osnabruck area. The windows all appear to have been enlarged, probably in the 20th century. The hand-loom weaving of coarse linens continued until the mid-19th century, when power-loom weaving of such fabrics was introduced, and when jute began to replace linen for coarse, strong fabrics. As the old village of Dairsie had gone, the name was transferred to this weaving settlement which had developed around it. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
