Scope and Content Entrance lock, Forth and Clyde Canal, Bowling, West Dunbartonshire The Forth and Clyde Canal was opened in 1775 from Grangemouth to Stockingfield, on the outskirts of Glasgow. It was completed to Bowling in 1790, to designs by Robert Whitworth. The canal was closed in 1962, but Bowling Basin remained in use for mooring boats. This shows the original entrance lock to the canal from the River Clyde. The white building was the canal office and also served as a custom house. The timber piled structure to the left was part of Bowling Harbour. This entrance lock was complemented in the mid-19th century by another one leading into the harbour. In the 1980s the lock in this view was abandoned. The canal was reopened in 2001, using the harbour lock to gain access to the River Clyde. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
