Scope and Content Heraldic ceiling, St Machar's Cathedral, Aberdeen St Machar's Cathedral is probably the fourth church on this site and mostly dates to the 15th century. It was damaged during the Reformation and ransacked by Cromwell's troops for stone to fortify Castlehill in 1650. The steeple collapsed in 1688. During the episcopate of Bishop Gavin Dunbar (1518-32) the oak ceiling was put over the nave. Constructed by James Winter 1519-21, the three rows of shields display the arms of the political hierarchy of Europe as seen from Scotland. Along the top are the arms of James V (left), followed by the nobles of Scotland; the arms of Pope Leo X (middle) followed by the prelates of Scotland; the arms of Emperor Charles V (right) precede those of the sovereigns of Europe.
