Scope and Content Kelvin Aqueduct, Forth and Clyde Canal, Skaethorn Road, Glasgow As part of the programme to complete the Forth and Clyde Canal, this aqueduct was designed by Robert Whitworth to provide a link from Stockingfield Junction to Bowling. This section opened in 1790. This shows the aqueduct from the north-east. Note the massive piers and curved spandrels (side walls), provided to support the weight of water in the channel. The arch on the left was used for a time, after 1896, by a branch line to Dawsholm Gas Works. This aqueduct and its associated flight of locks were the largest and most expensive works on the whole canal. The aqueduct was the largest in Europe when it was built. The canal was reopened to navigation in 2001 as part of the Millennium Link project. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
