Scope and Content Maryhill Locks, Forth and Clyde Canal, Maryhill Road, Glasgow This flight of five locks, with intermediate basins, was designed by Robert Whitworth as part of the programme to complete the Forth and Clyde Canal by constructing a link from Stockingfield Junction to Bowling. This section opened in 1790. This shows the top lock at Maryhill, with the lock gates cut down after closure of the canal in 1962. The foam at the end of the chamber shows how the top gates act as a weir, controlling the level of water in the entire summit level of the canal. This lock chamber was repaired on a number of occasions during its working life as can be seen by the large granite stones in this view. The locks were re-gated in the early 1990s, and the canal was reopened to navigation in 2001. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
