Scope and Content Annick Water Viaduct, Stewarton, Ayrshire (East Ayrshire council area) This viaduct was built to carry the Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Joint Railway over the Annick Water. This railway was built jointly by the Caledonian and Glasgow and South Western railways to give a direct route to Kilmarnock. This view shows the viaduct from the north east. It is constructed of cream-coloured sandstone, with rock-faced masonry, except under the arch rings. It has ten semicircular spans, on unusually slender piers. The construction of this railway gave the Caledonian Railway access to Kilmarnock, but meant that the Glasgow and South Western could effectively run Anglo-Scottish services jointly with the Midland Railway.
