Scope and Content Keathbank Mill, Blairgowrie, Perthshire (Perth and Kinross council area) This small jute and flax mill was built in 1864-5 and was designed to be water-powered by a breast wheel 4.27 by 5.49m, with assistance at times of droughr or frost by a single cylinder steam engine made by Carmichael and Co, Dundee. This view shows the flywheel end of the steam engine, with the large gear wheel through which drive was taken to the mill machinery. Note the balls of the Watt-type governor which controlled the speed of the engine. The engine had been modernised, probably in the early 20th century, by fitting a new cylinder with drop valves, giving greater economy. The boxed in shaft in the bottom left-hand corner of this view drove the valves. The mill is open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
