Scope and Content Keathbank Mill, Blairgowrie, Perthshire (Perth and Kinross council area) This small jute and flax mill was built in 1864-5 and was designed to be water-powered by a breast wheel 4.27 by 5.49m, with assistance at times of droughr or frost by a single cylinder steam engine made by Carmichael and Co, Dundee. This view shows the cylinder of the engine, with drop valves, replacing the original slide-valve cylinder, probably fitted in the early 20th century. The inlet valves are at the top of the cylinder, and the exhaust at the bottom. The modernisation of the engine by fitting drop valves improved its efficiency, and ppossibly allowed higher pressure steam to be used. Keathbank Mill is currently open to the public, so this engine can be viewed, as can the large water wheel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
