Scope and Content Coplawhill Tramway Works and Tram Depot, Albert Drive, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) This large complex started as a horse-tram depot built for the takeover by Glasgow Corporation of horse-tram services in the city. When the city tramways were electrified in 1899-1900 tramcar building and maintenance workshops were added. This view shows the timber sheds for the works, on the other side of Albert Drive. Most of the tramcars had wooden bodies, hence the scale of these sheds. At the far end is the training school for drivers and conductors. After 1962, when the tramways finally closed, part of the works was converted into a transport museum, and a museum store. The museum was moved to the Kelvin Hall some years later, and the area is now a venue for performing and visual arts. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
