Scope and Content Coplawhill Tramway Works and Tram Depot, Albert Drive, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) This large complex started as a horse-tram depot built for the takeover by Glasgow Corporation of horse-tram services in the city. When the city tramways were electrified in 1899-1900 tramcar building and maintenance workshops were added. This view shows the frontage of the workshops to Albert Drive. The round-headed doorways provided access for tramcars. The two bays nearest to the camera were the main erecting and repair shops, abandoned in 1966. After 1962, when the tramways finally closed, part of the works was converted into a transport museum, and a museum store. The museum was moved to the Kelvin Hall some years later, and the area is now a venue for performing and visual arts. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
