Scope and Content Castle Mills, Gilmore Park, Edinburgh This large complex had its origin in a silk mill built in the early 19th century. This was acquired in 1856 by the North British Rubber Co, an American concern founded to use Charles Goodyear's patent for vulcanising rubber, and greatly extended. This shows the mills from the west, looking along the Union Canal. The original silk mill is in the middle of the nearer range. The red and white brick building beyond is the largest of the extensions. The canal provided cooling water. The business moved out to Newbridge in the late 1960s, and the buildings seen here were demolished and replaced by a new mechanised brewery built for Scottish Brewers.
