Scope and Content Abbeyhill Station, London Road, Edinburgh This station was built in 1869 by the North British Railway on its new route from Waverley Station to North Leith, constructed to counter competition from the Caledonian Railway, which had reached Leith in 1864. This shows the entrance to the station from London Road. The booking office was in this neat stone building, and there were covered stairs down to the platforms, in a cutting at this point. A suburban train service served this station until 1964, when it closed due to a rationalisation of train services in the Edinburgh area. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
