Scope and Content Former Dalmarnock Flax and Jute Works, No 275 Dunn Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1863 by J Y Adams, sacking manufacturer, Dundee, and originally known as Dundee Works. In 1901 the firm were jute spinners and manufacturers of linens, hessians, tarpaulins, bags, baggings, sacks and sackings. This shows the frontage of the works from the west. The section nearest to the camera may well be part of the original 1863 factory, as too may be the chimney. As can be seen, the works had become the Dalmarnock Leather Works by 1967. Several flax and jute works were established in Glasgow in the mid-Victorian period, but this was the only one with staying power. The successor use, as a tannery, has also proved surprisingly durable. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
