Scope and Content Springfield Bleachworks, Springfield Road, Glasgow This complex was founded as a bleachworks in about 1826 by William Miller, and largely rebuilt in 1882-9 by John Blackwood & Son, 'bleachers, starchers, beamers and reelers of all classes of silk, cotton and wool' in 1901. This shows the complex from the north-east. Note the generally nondescript character of the buildings, and also the tall chimney, both typical of bleachworks. By 1967 the buildings were occupied by J & H M Dickson, sack merchants and manufacturers. The range of services offered by Blackwoods in 1901 shows that they were fully integrated into the weaving trades of the east end of Glasgow, which were still expanding at that time, but which declined after World War I.
