Description Kilmarnock, Campbell Street, Bridge View from NW

Date 1966

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 589181

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Glencairn Bridge, Campbell Street, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire This bridge over the River Irvine was built in the late 19th century to carry the main road from Kilmarnock to south Ayrshire. It replaced an 18th-century bridge, which remains in use for local traffic. This shows the bridge from the north-east. The slenderness of the piers is a clear guide to its late 19th-century construction, as is its fine ashlar masonry. On the right is part of a cooling tower serving Kilmarnock Power Station. This bridge carried main road traffic on the A77 trunk road until the Kilmarnock bypass was built in the 1970s. It still carries heavy traffic from the town to the south.
