Scope and Content Jute warehouse, Seagate, Dundee (Dundee City council area) This complex consisted of two parallel ranges of three-storey warehouses, with gables to Seagate. The western range was two bays wide, the eastern one bay wide, divided into separate.sections. At each level there was an external iron walkway. This view shows a horse lorry loaded with jute in the passage between the blocks. Note the spiral iron staircase giving access to the walkways at the upper levels. The careful compartmentalisation of this block of warehouses was due to the tendency of baled jute to spontaneous combustion, and an attempt to localise the effects of an outbreak of fire.
