Scope and Content Musselburgh Gas Works, Midlothian (East Lothian council area) Musselburgh Gas Works was founded in the early 19th century, and was subsequently rebuilt on a number of occasions, in the 1930s with a setting of vertical retorts. It was closed in the 1960s, following the creation of a gas grid in central Scotland. This view shows a circular stone building constructed to house a gas holder, and probably part of the original installation. To the left is part of the vertical retort house, with wartime camouflage paint still visible. As can be seen, after gas production ceased here the more modern holders continued to be used for gas storage. The other buildings on the site were demolished soon after this photograph was taken in 1966. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
