Scope and Content Paton's Bootlace Factory, High Street, Johnstone, Renfrewshire Incorporating part of Corse, Burns & Co's cotton mill of 1782, which is the oldest surviving cotton mill in Scotland, this bootlace factory was founded by William Paton in the mid-19th century. It was still in operation in 2001. This shows the factory from the north. The section on the left is the 'Old End' of the 1782 mill, the axle hole of whose waterwheel can be seen. The taller building to the rear is a late 19th-century addition, as is the large chimney. By the 1960s lace manufacture had been concentrated in the newer section of the factory, and the Old End was used for storage. The original Corse, Burns & Co mill was about twice the length of the surviving section. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
