Scope and Content A1 Service Bus Station, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire As bus services developed in the inter-war period, bus stations were constructed as central boarding points in larger towns and cities. Regulation of bus services from the 1930s gave confidence to operators in building these facilities. This shows the smaller of the two Kilmarnock bus stations, a simple open-fronted shed with a partly glazed roof. The A1 Service was a cooperative of bus owners providing services in north-west Ayrshire. The small covered bus stations in Kilmarnock were supplanted by a new, open station as part of a major town centre redevelopment in the late 1960s. The site of this one has since been redeveloped.
