Scope and Content Cardowan Colliery, Stepps, Lanarkshire (North Lanarkshire council area) This colliery was sunk by Nimmo and Dunlop in the 1920s. It was partly re-equipped in the 1950s by the National Coal Board, to produce coking coal for the Scottish iron industry, with a new shaft and over-shaft electric winders. This view shows the headgear of one of the two original shafts, still in use for winding men. Note its comparatively light construction, suggesting that it was always a secondary shaft. The colliery was a gassy one, and latterly the methane was drained from above the seam being worked, piped to the surface, and used as a fuel for the colliery boilers. When the pit closed one of the winding engines was preserved at Summerlee. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
