Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 587727

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Avon Viaduct, Linlithgow, West Lothian (West Lothian council area) This viaduct was built for the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway to designs by John Miller, and spans the broad valley of the river Avon. As in the other viaducts on the line the spandrels were originally hollow, but were filled with concrete in the 1960s. This view shows the viaduct from the south east. It has 23 spans, those over the river being skewed, as indicated by the broad pier towards the right-hand end. Note that the spandrels have been braced with old rails. The Edinburgh and Glasgow was a first-generation main line, designed when locomotives had very limited hauling power, and when all earth moving was done by pick, shovel, wheelbarrow and horse and cart.
