Scope and Content Anderston Cotton Work, 93 Cheapside Street, Anderston, Glasgow (City of Glasgow council area) This cotton-spinning mill was built for Henry Houldsworth, and was one of the first 'fireproof' mills in Scotland, with cast-iron columns and beams, supporting brick arched floors. The building was doubled in size in the mid 1850s, with timber floors. This view shows the building from the south east. Note the use of pilasters to break up the monotonous effect of large expanses of brick. In the 1850s extension, in the foreground, the architectural treatment of the original was replicated. The mill was built for spinning fine yarns, and was provided with steam heating through the cast-iron columns. It was used as a bonded warehouse from 1878 to 1964. It was the first large brick building in Glasgow. It was demolished in 1969. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
