Scope and Content Victoria Bread and Biscuit Works, 30 Wesleyan Street, Forbes Street and Cubie Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow (City of Glasgow council area) This large bakery was founded in 1880 by John McFarlane and Sons, and extended at various times up to the First World War. It was the largest of several mechanised bakeries in the East End of the city. This view shows the frontage to Wesleyan Street. The building on the left was built in 1886 to designs by McKissack and Rowan, and the five storey block beyond was added in 1895 by JM Munro. This bakery continued in operation until 1974, making bread, cakes teabread and Scotch pies. The biscuit-baking part of the original business was moved to a new purpose-built factory in Tollcross in the 1920s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
