Scope and Content Newhall Street Weaving Factory, Newhall Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow (City of Glasgow council area) This was a power-loom weaving factory established in 1859 by A and J Paterson. The main street-frontage block was built in 1865, and extended to the west in 1882. Behind these three-storey buildings were single-storey weaving sheds. This view shows the frontage blocks from the south west. The 1865 block is the taller. Note also the chimney which served the boiler-house supplying steam to the engine which originally drove the factory. By 1966 this had become a leather factory. It closed soon after, and has been demolished. The site has been developed for housing. This was a representative example of a medium-sized cotton-weaving factory, typical of the area.
