Scope and Content Ferguslie Mills, Paisley, Renfrewshire (Renfrewshire council area) This very large complexof cotton thread mills was founded in 1826 by James Coats. Between then and 1858 an E-plan block of five mills was developed, unquestionably the noblest block of mills in Scotland. This view shows the north east frontage from the north, with a central pedimented engine house, flanked by numbers four (right) and five (left) mills. The sandstone ashlar masonry was most unusual in Scottish textile mills. The mills were greatly extended from the mid 1880s by J and P Coats Limited. By 1966 the mills seen here were little used, and they were demolished in the late 197Os. Almost all the buildings on the site have now been demoilshed, and replaced by houses.
