Scope and Content Cladding on the exterior of the Red Road Development, Glasgow The Red Road Development was commissioned in 1960 to house people from the demolished slums of Glasgow. It was designed 1960-2 by Sam Bunton & Associates, and built 1962-9. The 8.7 hectare site contains six 31-storeyed tower blocks containing 720 flats; two 27-storeyed slab blocks; and one three-storeyed block. This shows the corner of one of the blocks, its lower level clad in brick. The open areas in the walls are glass-fronted balconies and the double windows are framed with wall panels, originally of asbestos on a steel framework. Some of the blocks had red, blue or ochre cladding added in 1982. The Red Road flats were designed to accommodate people after widespread demolition of slum housing in Glasgow. The development held 4,700 people in its 8.7 hectare site, the same as a small town. The blocks were declared unfit for habitation in 1980, and have since been converted to use as student accommodation, a YMCA, and executive flats. This development has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
