Scope and Content North British Diesel Engine Works, South Street, Glasgow This large engine works was built for the manufacture of marine diesel engines, by Barclay, Curle and Co, owners of two nearby shipyards. It was the first purpose-built works of its kind in Britain, and was designed in Germany. This view shows the materials-handling crane which ran along the east side of the building. Note how it could run over the office block, a later addition. This type of crane was typical of continental practice of the period. This works latterly built slow-speed diesel engines designed in Switzerland by Sulzer. It stopped making such engines in 1978, and was adapted for making guided missiles, and overhauling naval guns.
