Scope and Content Settlement at Skara Brae, Orkney The settlement at Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm destroyed part of the sand-dune which covered it. The village would originally have stood inland, but coastal erosion now means it is on the shore. It consists of houses and a workshop. This is a view of house 5 taken from a cell in the rear wall. A second cell is paved, has a drain is now ruined. As well as a central hearth and stone furniture, this house has a window to the left of the door. This is the only one in the village.
