Scope and Content Scottish Industrial Railway Centre, Minnivey, near Dalmellington, Ayrshire (East Ayrshire council area) The Minnivey Mine was driven in the early 1950s by the National Coal Board as part of a programme designed to produce coal from a number of small mines while much larger deep pits were being sunk to meet long term needs. This one closed in 1975. This view shows a wooden coal wagon on one of the sidings at the former Minnivey Mine, which were by 1981 being used by the Ayrshire Railway Preservation Group as a museum site. This wagon was used on the Dalmellington system. The former Dalmellington Iron Company railway lines in the Doon Valley were much valued by railway enthusiasts, and when the system finally closed in 1978 several of the locomotives and wagons were preserved, with items from other industrial systems.
