Scope and Content Haymarket Station, Haymarket Terrace, Edinburgh, Midlothian (City of Edinburgh council area) This station was opened in 1842 by the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway as its Edinburgh terminus. It had a train shed at a low level, with an imposing surface building housing booking office, waiting rooms and board room, designed by John Miller. This view shows the station building on the upper level, from the approach road. The train shed was approached by a stairway to the right of the building. The classical treatment of the frontage was typical of the period. This view was taken before the building was remodelled internally, and the layout of the forecourt changed. The frontage was also stone-cleaned. The train shed was dismantled in the early 1980s and re-erected at Bo'ness. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
