Scope and Content Troon Station. Troon, Ayrshire (South Ayrshire council area) This station was opened by the Glasgow and South Western Railway on a new line designed to bring the railway nearer to the town centre, to the growing villa developments parallel to the seashore, and to the golf links. This view shows the station from the north, looking towards Ayr. Note the covered footbridge, a comfort in what is rather an exposed location, and the 'Arts and Crafts' design of the platform buildings, typical of the period. The original Troon Station was on a straight route to the east, opened in 1839 by the Glasgow, Paisley Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway, at a time when Troon was primarily a coal-exporting port. By 1892 it was a fashionable seaside town. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
