Scope and Content Millport Gas Works, Millport, Great Cumbrae, Bute (Argyll and Bute council area) Millport Gas Works was founded in 1840 to serve the fishing village and seaside resort of Millport, which developed as a result of the rise of Clyde steamboat services. The works was subsequently much enlarged to cope with peak holiday demand. This view shows the entrance to the works, with the large two-lift gasholder. This was probably built between the wars. In front of the holder is a small lime-washed office which may well have dated from the start of the works in 1840. Until the late 19th century coal gas was made primarily for lighting, as it was more convenient than oil lighting. The by-product coke was sold as a fuel. Millport was the last works in the British Isles to make gas from coal. apart from coke ovens. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
