Scope and Content Millport Gas Works, Millport, Great Cumbrae, Bute (Argyll and Bute council area) Millport Gas Works was founded in 1840 to serve the fishing village and seaside resort of Millport, which developed as a result of the rise of Clyde steamboat services. The works was subsequently much enlarged to cope with peak holiday demand. This view shows the works courtyard, with the retort-house to the rear. and the condenser and washer/scrubber in front. The condenser, washer and scrubber were all devices to remove tar and ammonia from the gas made in the retorts by distilling coal. Millport was the last works in the British Isles to make gas from coal. apart from coke ovens. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
