Scope and Content Muirtown Swing Bridge, Caledonian Canal, Inverness, Inverness-shire (Highland council area) The Caledonian Canal was designed by Thomas Telford and built with Government funding with the objectives of providing a safe passage across Scotland, and of providing employment in the Highlands to counter pressure for migration. This view shows the swing bridge which carried the main road north from Inverness, built in 1930 to replace one of Telford's original two-leaf hand operated swing bridges. This one was more robust, and was electrically operated. This bridge was built by Sir William Arrol and Co Ltd, Glasgow. It carried traffic on the A9 until 1982, when the Kessock Bridge was opened, taking the road straight over the Black Isle. This bridge is however still in use for more local traffic.
