Inverness, Clachnacarry Road, Tollhouse General View

SC 573115

Description Inverness, Clachnacarry Road, Tollhouse General View

Date 1980

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 573115

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Tollhouse, Muirtown, Inverness, Inverness-shire (Highland council area) This tollhouse was on the main road north from Inverness, and is like others on that route, of more elaborate character than many such buildings. This view shows the tollhouse from the south. The canted front and low-pitched roof with prominent eaves are typical features, but the Tudor drip moulds above the windows are not. The central panel would have contained a list of toll charges. Tolls on Scottish roads and bridges were removed in the 1880s, but most tollhouses remained in use as dwelling houses. This one had been used in this way until the 1960s, but was decaying in 1980. It had been reconditioned by 2000. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
