Description Red Smiddy Ironworks View of site under excavation

Date 1980

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 573063

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former blast furnace, Red Smiddy, Poolewe, Ross and Cromarty (Highland council area) This was one of two charcoal-fuelled blast furnaces built by Sir George Hay under a privilege granted by King James VI. This was the second, and more advanced, the earlier one being at Letterewe, further to the south east. This view shows the remains of the furnace from the bank above. The central hearth can be seen, with the blowing arch in front of it. Here was the bellows which blew air into the furnace. The molten iron and slag ran out to the right, into sand moulds. This view was taken when the remains of the furnace were excavated, revealing that it was similar in basic design to furnaces built more than a century later for smelting iron with charcoal.
