Scope and Content Fort, Castle Hill, Candybank, Lanarkshire This fort occupies the rounded summit of Castle Hill to the SW of Candybank steading. Oval on plan, it has three ramparts, the outer ones heavily reduced by modern ploughing, and the stances of timber round-houses can be seen within the interior. Viewed from the W, this aerial photograph has been taken in high summer, when the grass has been parched brown over most of the interior. Deeper pockets of soil have retained a lusher growth, picking out the wall-trench of a round-house near the centre. Large numbers of forts are found throughout the Border counties and into Lanarkshire. Most were occupied in the middle centuries of the first millennium BC and many, as here, contain surface traces of the stances of timber round-houses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
