Scope and Content Headstone of Elizabeth Robertson, St Margaret's Parish Churchyard, (formerly Restalrig Parish Church), Restalrig, Edinburgh The parish church at Restalrig has an ancient history dating back to the 12th century. The present church dates from the 15th century, and, although it was mainly destroyed during the Reformation in 1560, the graveyard continued to be used. This headstone was erected to 'Elizabethe Robertsone, spouse to William Watters, Smith in Abbeyhill', who died in 1734. The top is carved with a crowned hammer, the badge of the Hammermen, one of the ancient trade corporations of Edinburgh. The Incorporation of Hammermen, a 'trades union' of crafts whose work involved the use of a hammer on metal, was granted the use of a royal crown on its coat of arms. Members included blacksmiths, silversmiths, cutlers, glovers, saddlers and armourers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
