Scope and Content Whisky bottle, Museum of Islay Life, Port Charlotte, Islay, Argyll The Museum of Islay Life was established in a former church on the edge of Port Charlotte village during the 1970s. By 1980 it had a fine collection of objects relating to life on the island, including a number of items from the whisky trade. This view shows a stoneware whisky bottle which contained whisky supplied by Pattisons Ltd, of Leith. The bottle was probably made by one of the Lothian potteries. The brand name emphasises the medicinal value of Scotch. Pattisons Ltd collapsed spectacularly in 1897, bringing the 1890s whisky boom to an abrupt end. The industry did not really recover until the 1960s. This relic, therefore, has notable historical resonances. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
