Scope and Content Former Gartloch Distillery, Chryston, Lanarkshire (City of Glasgow council area) This was built as a patent-still grain distillery by Northern Distilleries Ltd, which failed in 1900. The distillery was sold to James Calder and Co Ltd, and operated until 1921, when Calders were taken over by the DCl, and Gartloch closed. This view shows the large brick-built warehouses on the right, and the offices on the left, all that was left of the distillery in 1980. The warehouses were then used by Scottish Grain Distillers, but were closed in the 1980s and demolished. Northern Distilleries Ltd also owned Gerston/ Ben Morven Highland Malt Distillery in Caithness. The company, which had borrowed from the Law Union and Crown Insurance Co to finance the building of Gartloch, failed in the downturn after the 1890s boom. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
