Scope and Content Craigentinny House, Loaning Road, Restalrig, Edinburgh, from the west Craigentinny House, a 16th-century baronial mansion, was built for the northisbets of Dean and Craigentinny. It was enlarged in the 17th century, and skilfully altered by the architect, David Rhind, in 1849. The house is now a Community Centre. This picturesque house, originally a plain rectangular block with small turrets at each corner, is rubble-built. The west gable has two pepperpot turrets, embellished in 1849 by David Rhind, an architect with a passion for turrets. The house was described as 'once a simple oblong-shaped mansion, about four storeys in height, with crowstepped gables, and circular turrets'. During the 19th century it 'was made much more ornate' with 'a striking aspect like a Scots-French chateau'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
