Scope and Content Imperial Cottages, Carron, Moray (Moray council area) Imperial Distillery was built beside Carron Station on the Strathspey Railway in 1897 by Thomas Mackenzie. The name marked Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, and the design featured a cast-iron imperial crown. These houses were for workers. This view shows the cottages from the south. They are about half a mile from the distillery, and spaciously sited, as can be seen here, with a common grassed area in front. The 'Arts and Crafts' design is typical of the period. These cottages are close to the route of the Strathspey Railway, which was operated by the Great north of Scotland Railway. An unstaffed halt - Imperial Cottages - was provided for the families living there. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
