Scope and Content Auld Brig o' Doon, Alloway, Ayrshire (South Ayrshire council area) The Auld Brig o' Doon was made famous by Robert Burns in his long poem 'Tam o' Shanter, but it is of considerable interest in its own right as a surviving single-arched medieval bridge. This view shows the bridge from the south west. It is constructed largely of sandstone ashlar, and has a single high segmental arch, which is narrower than its abutments in a manner characteristic of early masonry bridges. The bridge was repaired in 1832, and again in 1979-80, when a large number of face stones were replaced. Regardless of how much original fabric remains, this is a noble as well as famous structure.
