Scope and Content Ardmore Distillery, Kennethmont, Aberdeenshire (Aberdeenshire council area) This distillery was founded in 1898-9 by William Teacher and Son, blenders, Glasgow, who extended it from two to four stills in 1955, and to eight in 1974. Teachers became part of Allied Brewers in 1976, and Ardmore now belongs to Allied Distillers. This view shows the stillhouse as rebuilt in 1974, with its eight very large coal-fired stills. Its scale can be judged from the size of the figures on the floor. Ardmore had one of the two largest coal-fired stillhouses in Scotland in 1980, the other being at Glenfiddich, where the stills were much smaller. The distillery was built at the end of the 1890s whisky boom, and was rail-served. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
