Scope and Content Custom House, Broad Street, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire (Aberdeenshire council area) This custom house was built on a site overlooking the harbour at Fraserburgh as it was before it was greatly extended in the late 19th century. When this building was constructed most of Fraserburgh's trade was seaborne. This view shows the building from the south east. It is unique among Scottish custom houses in having its entrance on an angle, and is a very sophisticated design, reflecting the economic importance of Buchan at the time. With the coming of the railway in 1865 the maritime trade of Fraserburgh declined, but this was more than counteracted by the rise of the herring fishing in the 1880s and later. The custom house now handles VAT work. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
