Scope and Content Glenmoray-Glenlivet Distillery, Bruceland Road, Elgin, Morayshire (Moray council area) This distillery was converted from a brewery in 1897 by the Glen Moray Glenlivet Distillery Co Ltd. It was silent from 1910 to c1923, when it was acquired by Macdonald and Muir, blenders, Leith. It is still owned by their successors, Glenmorangie plc. This view shows the distillery courtyard. The building in the background was probably part of the brewery. Behind it on the right is a concrete silo used originally for barley storage. This distillery was a product of the 1890s whisky boom, which was at its height in Moray and Banffshire. Conversion of breweries and mills was a feature of the boom, probably because such establishments had water rights. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
